The natural beauty of Skye is underpinned by...
Local Walking
Our guide to popular walks around the area is just one way you can immerse yourself into the beauty spot that is the Isle of Skye. However, we provide only brief descriptions of the walks and consequently the routes are undertaken at your own risk; we do not hold liability for any inaccuracy or omission from this guide.

Old Man of Storr
The distinct Old Man of Storr is iconic in that it is one of the world’s most renowned landscape photography spots.
The starting point to the Old Man of Storr walking route is accessible from the designated pay and display car park on the A855, a short 7-mile drive from Portree.
Walk difficulty - Moderate
Distance – 3 miles , 5 km
Time - 1.5h – 2h
This is a popular walk, so it will be busy especially at peak times! We suggest the optimal time to fit this into your itinerary is in the early hours of the morning, not long after sunrise.
The beginning of the path is clearly marked and well maintained, taking you through what was a forest.
After the deforested section, the path gives way to a well-used grass path. You will eventually pass through a wooden gate and from now on the path can be quite muddy. Just follow the path to the top.
The views from the top are outstanding! Look out to sea over the Islands of Raasay and Rona and then beyond to the mainland. Looking South there are views of the ‘Storr Lochs’ and then on to Portree and the Cuillin Hills.

The Quiraing
The Quiraing is a loop circuit which will bring you back to your starting point (the carpark). Please be aware this walk is not suitable if the weather is poor. The route takes you near high cliffs, so it is not recommended in windy conditions or if it is misty or wet.
Walk difficulty - Difficult
Distance - 4 miles – 6.8 km
Time - 2 h
The start of the walk is accessed from either the villages of Staffin or Uig, which are joined by a single-track road.
Follow the path that leads north from the carpark, the path is rough under foot with steep grassy slopes on your right-hand side.
As you look ahead you will see high cliffs and to the right, a rock structure which is known as the Prison, follow the path to the Needle.
The views are captivating. As you look out East you can see the village of Staffin below then the beautiful Islands of Raasay, Rona and then beyond the dramatic hills of Torridon on the Mainland. Enjoy this breath-taking experience!

Munro Walking
Munros are mountains in Scotland over 3000 feet high
On Walk highlands you can record all your Munro ascents on your own interactive map, and keep a diary, complete with photos, maps and your gps tracks, to store your record of all your walking exploits.
These spectacular summits were first listed by Sir Hugh Munro (1856 - 1919) in his 'Munros Tables', published in the Journal of the Scottish Mountaineering Club (SMC) in 1891. Sir Hugh divided the peaks into 283 separate mountains (now known as the Munros), whilst 255 further summits over 3000 feet were only subsidiary 'Tops'. His list caused quite a stir at the time, as it had previously been thought that there were only around 30 mountains of that height.

Portree is the largest town on Skye and our capital. She boasts a harbour, surrounded by striking cliffs, and a pier designed by Thomas Telford.
