Most people know Glenfinnan for its famous viaduct - but this place marks one of the most important moments in Scottish history.

📍 Glenfinnan Monument, Loch Shiel

It was here, on 19 August 1745, that Prince Charles Edward Stuart - Bonnie Prince Charlie, raised his standard and began the Jacobite Rising of 1745.

Highlanders gathered at Glenfinnan to support his attempt to restore the Stuart monarchy to the British throne. The campaign would ultimately end in defeat at the Battle of Culloden in April 1746.

The monument was built in the early 19th century to commemorate those who fought and died for the Jacobite cause, with the lone Highlander standing at the top added later.

So next time you visit Glenfinnan for that famous viaduct view, take some time to explore the monument too - the history here goes far beyond Harry Potter.
